The NBA announced on Friday the 36 officials who have been selected to officiate in the 2019 playoffs. These officials are selected to work in the playoffs based on performance during the regular season. The number of crew chiefs for each round is the same as that of the regular season, but the playoff crews are smaller. At the end of the playoffs, only 12 officials will serve in the Finals.
The 36 officials will work first-round playoff games. The NBA has a total of 16 teams in this year’s playoffs, so there is a high number of games to officiate. The league evaluates potential officials by collecting ratings from teams and former officials. Currently, five active referees have worked nearly 1,000 playoff games. Despite their high level of experience, there are some rookies who will only be working a handful of games.
The NBA also met with officials Monday to choose the best officials for its playoffs. The selections are made by the NBA Referee Operations management team based on their performance throughout the season. They will evaluate the officials after each round to determine which ones are best suited for the playoffs. Three officials are veterans of the playoffs and will have many years of experience in the NBA. Other officials who will be working games this year include: Ray Acosta, Matt Boland, Derrick Collins, Lauren Holtkamp, JB DeRosa, and Leon Wood.
The selection committee has prioritized relationships between referees and players. A process is in place to evaluate officials before the playoffs begin. The first-round pool process will remain the same, but the second-round process will be simplified. The NBA has emphasized the importance of improving relationships between referees and players. There is a list of 40 officials who are qualified for the postseason, but some of them will end up being an alternate. The next playoff officials are the same level as the original officials.
Following the announcement of the 36 playoff referees, the Warriors will take on the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The Warriors are expected to play their infamous nemesis Will Barton, but they won’t have to worry about Kogut because he wasn’t chosen for the postseason. Nonetheless, the 16 playoff teams will be pleased to have Tony Brothers in the ranks of postseason officials.
